CASE STUDY 4 - MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT REHABILITATION

61 year old male, left hip shattered in accident, left leg 5cm shorter than right.

When I first started treating client he was still bed bound, very shortly after the accident. He had suffered huge trauma to the left hip which needed several operations to try to repair the bone and left significant nerve damage. He was immobile.

His consultant recommended masssage as a way to stimulate the leg and aid lymphatic drainage. this was the focus of the initial months of treatment.

As he got stronger and started physio the emphasis changed to dealing with the problems this disability caused. Having one leg so much shorter than the other put a huge imbalance in the pelvis and lumbar area, and using crutches, and later a walking stick, put a lot of strain on the shoulders.

As well as loosening the muscles I had to develop some passive stretches for the spine to realign the lumber and shoulder areas.

This is an ongoing case and we do maintenance treatments every four weeks.
